Itinerary

Weimar offers a worldwide unique historic tradition. Museums, memorial places, churches and an interesting history are reminding on the life of many well-known persons. The thousand-year-old city knows many big names as for example Goethe, Schiller, Herder, Wieland, Lucas Cranch, Johann Sebastian Bach and Franz Liszt. Today Weimar is a pulsating centre of art and science. Arrive early – Weimar is awaiting you with historic and culinary inner city.

Start your cycling tour with a scenic and wonderful stage through the Weimarer Land: You leave Weimar in northern direction on the Ilmradweg. Again and again there are opportunities to get off the bike and take a break in a shady park or a romantic castle dock. Plan a little more time in the bell and art city of Apolda.

Today, around Weimar, you will follow in the footsteps of the painter Lyonel Feininger, who was one of the first masters of the Bauhaus. The round tour takes you through the charming surroundings of the villages located south of Weimar in the landscape protection area “Mittleres Ilmtal” and lets you enjoy the view of many of Feininger’s favourite motifs. Glass displays often allow you to directly compare the paintings with their originals.

Via the Thuringian Stadttekette long-distance cycle path you cycle to the state capital Erfurt. On your way you will pass through Niederzimmern, where you can make a short detour to the medieval watchtower of the village, the “Wartturm. ” Once in the state capital, it is worth visiting the Krämerbrücke, the picturesque half-timbered houses, the famous cathedral and the medieval old town. Afterwards you will drive back to Weimar via Bechstedtstraß with its organ building museum in Thuringia.

Cycle today through the picturesque Ilm valley through Bad Berka with its Kneipp pool for the cyclists' calves, past the Rittergut München, via Kranichfeld with its two castles to Hohenfelden. This area is ideal for picnicking and swimming. If you go by boat in this popular recreation area, you can visit one of the numerous cafés and restaurants that invite you to take a break. The Thuringian open-air museum is also worth a visit.

On this day, we invite you to explore the Ilm Cycle Path once again. Today's stage takes you further along the romantic Ilm, where Goethe was already reminded of Tuscany in Italy: gentle hills and picturesque vineyards create a unique flair. The stage destination is the idyllic spa town of Bad Sulza with its Tuscany thermal baths. Relax with ‘Liquid Sound’ or in the attractive spa area before travelling back to Weimar by train.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.
