Itinerary

The pretty town of Husum is a great place to start your bike tour through Schleswig. One of the sights here is the powerful contrast between low and high tide. And you can experience the difference right from the town itself. Walk through the narrow streets and lanes, all lined with pretty gabled houses. A lot of restaurants and cafes have established themselves around the harbour. Get into the maritime spirit on your bike through Schleswig.

You now leave the North Sea and cycle via the Eider-Treene-Sorge route to Hollingstedt. This is where you'll find the largest archaeological monument in Northern Europe from the Viking era. The trading place, Haithabu, and the complex system of Danewerk ramparts. You soon reach today's destination, the endearing little town of Schleswig. It's located on the banks of the River Schlei. Refresh yourself with a jump into the water or go off exploring maybe! Gottorf Castle, the Baroque Gardens and the giant globe are definitely worth a visit.

The long arm of the Baltic Sea, as the Schlei is called, accompanies you on today's stage of your bike tour through Schleswig. There are numerous pretty towns between Schleswig and the transition to the open sea. Take a break in Arnis, Germany's smallest town, and enjoy the maritime flair. Another short stretch in the saddle and you reach Kappeln. Discover the largest Dutch mill in the state, the Heringszaun (fish weir) and the museum harbour.

You cycle across the Schwansen peninsula to the Baltic seaside resort of Damp. If you have never looked at the sea from a beach chair, you have the opportunity to do so on Damp's four-kilometre-long sandy beach. Continue through unspoilt nature, past old avenues, over rolling hills and green forests to Eckernförde. Spend the evening at the idyllic harbour with its beautiful promenade. Be sure to taste the freshly caught fish in one of the cosy restaurants.

On today's stage of your bike tour through Schleswig you have to decide. Are your legs still fit enough? Then cycle along the coast towards Kiel. Shortly before the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, the Kiel Canal flows into the sea. It is one of the busiest waterways in the world. Numerous bridges, locks and ships are passed. Alternatively, take the shortcut through the inland, crossing forests, fields and moors.

Before you cycle on, stay a little longer in Rendsburg. Stroll through the old town with its narrow streets, medieval squares and the old town hall. Back in the saddle, you cycle through the breathtaking nature again. Enjoy the peace and quiet in the forests and along rivers. Again and again you will pass through small villages with thatched roofs where time seems to stand still. Situated between the rivers Eider and Treene is Friedrichstadt, your stage destination today.

Stroll through Friedrichstadt, which is also called the Dutch Town because of its numerous canals. On the way to Tönning, you will pass the famous Hoyerswort manor house. Soon you will reach St. Peter-Ording. You will certainly be thrilled by the 12 kilometre long flat sandy beach. From the dunes you have an unmistakable view over the houses on stilts, the whizzing beach sailors and the wide sea.

After breakfast, your varied bike tour through Schleswig comes to an end. If you would like to enjoy your holiday at the North Sea even longer, we will be happy to book you an extra night.
