Main cycle path | Bamberg-Aschaffenburg

From Bamberg to Aschaffenburg

The Main winds its way in large loops through the varied landscape of Franconia. It makes its way through the marvellous Franconian wine country and meanders slowly towards the dark green forests of the Spessart behind Würzburg. The landscapes along the Main are among the culturally richest and most diverse in Bavaria and Hesse; sometimes the surface of the river seems to reflect the culture and history of the countries like a magic glass.

Itinerary

Individual journey to Bamberg. You should start your cycle tour with a tour of the city of Emperor Henry II, who dreamed of, built and loved Bamberg. It is not without reason that UNESCO has awarded the entire historic centre of Bamberg the title of ‘World Heritage Site’.

The Main Cycle Path takes you a few kilometres beyond Bamberg from the realms of ‘Beer Franconia’ to ‘Wine Franconia’. The cosy little half-timbered and wine-growing town of Zeil am Main is the first proof of this. Haßfurt lies at the foot of the Haßberge mountains. The River Main first takes you to the ‘ball bearing town’ of Schweinfurt. On a short tour, you will soon realise that Schweinfurt is more than just an industrial town.

Cycle comfortably along the well-maintained Main cycle path through small, romantically situated villages, wide vineyards, extensive orchards and lush green Main meadows. Shortly before Volkach, you should not miss a visit to what is probably Tilman Riemenschneider's most famous carving: The ‘Madonna in the Rosary’. The best Franconian wines grow and flourish around the winegrowing town.

You make a long stop in the vibrant city of Würzburg. The lively baroque and cultural city is dominated by the Marienberg fortress. Sights such as the Residenz, St Kilian's Cathedral, Neumünster, the historic ensemble of St Mary's Chapel and Falkenhaus on the market square, the Old Main Bridge and the traditional wineries in the heart of the old town will make your time fly by. You then cycle on to Zellingen or Karlstadt on the cycle path, which is always flat.

There is plenty to see today: the three-river town of Gemünden, the foothills of the Spessart, Lohr am Main with its historic buildings and Franconian half-timbered houses and the peace and seclusion of small villages in the hinterland on both banks of the Main. In the small town of Marktheidenfeld, situated between the Main and the Spessart, you can round off today's cycling day in a cosy atmosphere with a glass of wine.

After the next bend in the river, the view falls on Stadtprozelten, where one of the most beautiful castle ruins on the Main, the Henneburg, towers above the town. With Freudenberg, you reach a recognised recreational resort which, in addition to Kneipp facilities, a bathing lake and the historic town centre, also has a castle ruin from the late 12th century to offer.

In Miltenberg, the ‘Schnatterloch’, one of the most picturesque German squares and a world-famous photo motif, and the ‘Riesen’ inn are particularly famous. You then head towards the small town of Klingenberg with its vineyards, wine taverns and hedgerow inns. You ‘glide’ along the Main cycle path to the ‘Spessart metropolis’ of Aschaffenburg.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.
