Lahn cycle path

Quiet romance and a silent dream

An insider tip among cycling enthusiasts! You will be amazed by the tranquil dream of nature with picturesque half-timbered villages and extensive nature reserves. Stroll through the narrow streets of the historic university town of Marburg with its famous Elisabeth Church. On your trip, visit the Goethe town of Wetzlar with the Lottehaus and the disused iron ore mine Grube Fortuna. Discover the residential town of Weilburg with its castle complex, which is well worth seeing, and the old town of Limburg with its world-famous cathedral, which is completely listed as a historical monument. Take a break at Arnstein Monastery and the old inn on the banks of the Lahn before reaching Bad Ems, one of the most beautiful and traditional spas in Germany. Top off your cycle tour with a cycle excursion to the Loreley and enjoy the boat trip back from St. Goar to the old wine village of Braubach or Koblenz. The most beautiful places to stay in the Lahn Valley and the well-balanced route offer all cyclists plenty of time to enjoy the many sights.

Itinerary

You should plan enough time to visit the historic old town and the Elisabeth Church (train journey possible, car park at the hotel for a fee, bike hire at the hotel).

Today you cycle through the wide Lahn valley past idyllic bathing ponds to Wetzlar. Explore Wetzlar's old town and the interesting cathedral on a walk in the afternoon.

You leave Wetzlar over the stone bridge and soon reach the Fortuna mine (+ 8 km), the only iron ore mine in Germany, where visitors can see a demonstration of ore mining underground using original machinery. The route to Weilburg, whose Renaissance castle sits on a high rocky ridge above the Lahn, is an unforgettable landscape.

Today, the course of the river winds its way between the Taunus and Westerwald. You cycle along the tarmac towpath via Aumenau and Runkel to Limburg with its world-famous cathedral.

Enjoy a scenic highlight today: off the beaten track through an unspoilt valley landscape from Diez to Balduinstein. There are two climbs on this day, one of which you can comfortably bypass by train (11 km). Afterwards, take a break at Arnstein Monastery, Nassau Castle or the old inn on the banks of the Lahn before cycling into Bad Ems.

After 12 kilometres, the Rhine Valley opens up before your eyes. Here you crown the cycle tour with a detour (+ 29 km) via Boppard and St. Goar to the Loreley. From St. Goar to Koblenz you travel by boat (Tuesday - Sunday), on Mondays you cycle to Koblenz and enjoy a tour of castles and palaces by boat.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.
