East Frisian South

Cycle tour through a "Land of freedom"

East Frisians have always been freedom-loving. For a long time, chieftains ruled this proud land. It is said that landscapes are characterised by the people who live in them. This is certainly true of East Frisia. The rugged nature, criss-crossed by numerous canals, awakens a longing for freedom. Experience it for yourself on this journey through the south of East Frisia. You will encounter mighty ships, for example in Papenburg's Meyer Werft shipyard or in the museum harbour in Leer. Magnificent houses, mills and castles adorn the towns, while the land itself with its moors defies human rule. No: East Frisia will never allow its freedom to be taken away.

Itinerary

The information meeting and bike handover (if booked) take place in the late afternoon. The seaport town is home to several museum ships. If you like fish, you should try matjes or crabs here. One overnight stay in Emden.

Today you first cycle to the Emden district of Petkum. From here, the ferry takes you to Ditzum, where fishing has a long tradition. The fishing boats in the harbour still form a picturesque backdrop today. (The ferry crossing is not included in the tour price). Your route now takes you along the Ems via Jemgum to Leer. The charming and romantic old town of Leer is known far beyond the city limits. The old town centre ensemble includes the town hall, built in 1894 in the German-Dutch Renaissance style. The museum harbour, which is home to many proud and traditional ships, will also take you back in time.

You cycle along numerous Fehn canals and moors through a landscape full of rugged charm, where picturesque bascule bridges stretch across the water and quaint farms wring human habitat from nature. Your destination today is Papenburg, also known as the ‘Venice of the North’ due to the canals and bascule bridges in the city centre. One of Papenburg's special attractions is the Meyer Werft shipyard, which is based here and is internationally renowned for the construction of cruise ships. It can be visited. Prior booking is required: telephone 0 49 61 / 8 39 60 or www.papenburg-tourismus.de.

Today's stage takes you between the Ems and the Dollart estuary through the vast East Frisian countryside. You reach Ditzum via Bunde and the ferry takes you to the other side of the Ems to Petkum (ferry not included in the price). From here you return to your starting point in Emden.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.
