Danube bike path | Donaueschingen-Donauwörth

Along the German Danube

Our Danube cycle tour takes you through the rough and rugged landscape of the Baar, which stretches between the Black Forest and the Swabian Alb. If the riverbed suddenly dries up along the way - don't worry, the water will reappear a short distance later, you have only reached the Danube seepage, where the river disappears into the limestone. Numerous monasteries, castles and palaces line the route and in Ulm you climb the world's highest church tower.

Itinerary

The Brigach and Breg Black Forest rivers join to form the Danube near the town. The Fürstenberg castle built in the Belle Epoch style is a testament to the importance of the Fürstenberg family.

The first stage leads you through the so-called “Baar“ landscape. In Immendingen you will be able to visit an important natural phenomenon: the sinking of the Danube. Here the river disappears beneath the porous chalk rock for the majority of the year to flow into the Rhine.

The limestone cliffs are over 100 metres high and the river and cycle path meander between them. Time and again you can discover an old castle or what is left of it today on the towering rocks. In Sigmaringen there is already the next magnificent castle to discover - Hohenzollern Castle is still inhabited by the princely family today and an interesting guided tour awaits you (optional).

You follow the course of the river at a leisurely pace until shortly after Hundersingen, where you should definitely make a stop at the Heuneburg open-air museum to immerse yourself in the world of the Celts. In Obermarchtal, your destination for today's stage, a baroque gem awaits your visit - the former monastery can be visited.

Today you cycle through the Urdonau valley to Blaubeuren with the famous Blautopf, a powerful karst spring and the beginning of a large cave system. To make this stage a little shorter, you can cycle directly along the Danube to Ulm, saving you around 10 kilometres (6 mi). Your destination is Ulm with the highest church tower in the world, from which you have a marvellous view.

Between Ulm and Dillingen there is a succession of small towns, all beautifully preserved and situated on flood-safe hills away from the river. Lauingen is also known as the town of towers.

Even today, the villages are usually a little off the beaten track on flood-protected elevations. Cycle leisurely through the Danube floodplains to Donauwörth, situated at the mouth of the Wörnitz. The most important trade route between Nuremberg and Augsburg once crossed the Danube here.

After breakfast, individual departure or start of your extension.
