Itinerary

The old magnificent Hanseatic town was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and simply radiates charm. Most people associate Lübeck with the Holsten Gate, marzipan and Thomas Mann. But there is much more to see: the crooked brick houses, alleyways and courtyards, the town hall. And the fish rolls on the banks of the Trave at sunset taste particularly good.

Todays stage on the Baltic Sea Cycle Route offers splendid views of Lübeck and Neustädter bay. You not only pass the seaside resorts of Timmendorfer Strand and Scharbeutz but can also visit Germany’s oldest lighthouse in Travemünde. The small harbour town of Holstein, where you stay the night, has ‒ in addition to its fjord-like harbour and pagoda granary ‒ a pretty historic quarter.

Today you cycle along Lübeck Bay to the coastal resort of Grömitz with its 400 m long pier. From here you get a wonderful view of the sandy beach which stretches some 8 km. Passing Grossenbrode, the spring board to the island of Fehmarn, you carry on to today’s destination Heiligenhafen. The pretty old town and the remarkable salt storage are worth a walk.

The first town on the Baltic Sea Cycle Route today is Oldenburg with Germany’s oldest guild. Stately homes and Knicks ‒ Schleswig-Holstein’s traditionally grown hedges ‒ line your path. You soon arrive in Brazil and California. No, that’s not a mistake! Two sections of the beach have these names in Schönberg, todays destination. Pedal through unspoiled countryside and former salt meadows, cycling 3 km inland.

Today you first set off to Laboe, the town of swans. From there you take the ferry over the Kiel Firth, into which the North-Sea-Baltic-Sea canal flows, to Friedrichsort. Alternatively, you can stay on the boat and continue to Kiel and visit Schleswig-Holstein’s capital city. Then, the Baltic Sea Cycle Route takes you along the firth through Schwedeneck passing meadows and woods to Eckenförde.

Leave this Baltic coast resort and pedal north via the semi-peninsula Schwansen to Kappeln. You cycle through cosy little villages and the coastal resort of Damp, past prehistoric and Stone Age grave sites. In Kappeln, the town on the river Schlei, there is no danger of getting bored exploring this town. It’s where you'll find the biggest Dutch windmill of the area; visit the fish weir and museum harbour, too!

Today's route takes you through the attractive countryside of Angeln, between the Schlei and Flensburg. Finally you cycle along the Flensburg Firth to one of Germany’s most beautiful water castles ‒ the renaissance castle in Glücksburg. After a visit, cross the firth by boat. After almost an hour you will land in Flensburg ‒ the most northern German city along the Baltic Sea Cycle Route.

Please note: The ferry do not cruise in April, Mai and September on monday as well as October you have to cycle the whole stage, approx. 75 km.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.
