Altmühl and Danube

Cycling through a beautiful landscape

This tour combines the most beautiful section of the Altmühl Cycle Path with the Danube and the little-travelled Wellheim Valley, which was created by the ancient Danube. Two boat trips allow you to enjoy the landscape from the comfort of the water. The medieval towns of Regensburg, Ingolstadt and Eichstätt are cultural highlights on this circular tour, which is characterised by nature and charm.

Itinerary

The city is considered the best-preserved major city in Germany and is a UNSECO World Heritage Site in its entirety. Enjoy your stay in the medieval alleyways.

You cycle up the Danube to Kelheim to the mouth of the Altmühl. Here you board a boat that takes you through the spectacular Danube gorge to Weltenburg Abbey. Your destination is Abensberg/Bad Gögging, where the Romans already knew how to utilise the thermal springs.

A leisurely ride through hop fields to Ingolstadt, not only home to the Audi factory, but also a well-preserved old Bavarian fortress town. The Bavarian Beer Purity Law was enacted here more than 500 years ago. In Neuburg you will find one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles on the Danube.

Today you cycle from the Danube to the Altmühl, utilising the original Danube valley. The impressive rock formations that have made the Altmühl valley famous can already be found here. Eichstätt was turned into a baroque residence by the bishops.

Extensive stroll through the town of Eichstätt. To the Vetoniana Roman fort and on through the charming nature park. Past the imposing Kipfenberg Castle to the medieval town of Beilngries.

Today you are once again guided by the Altmühl. You follow it from Dietfurt along the bed of the Main-Danube Canal and soon reach Riedenburg, the pearl of the Altmühl Valley. In Kelheim, between the confluence of the Altmühl and the Danube, you pass the famous Liberation Hall on the Michelberg - well worth a visit!

Before you make your way to Regensburg, you should gather your strength and cycle up to the Befreiungshalle. From there you have a marvellous view over the region. The route then continues at a leisurely pace to Regensburg, where you reach the northernmost point of the Danube. The city is considered to be the best-preserved German city and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.
