Tauern cycle path

From Krimml to Passau

This cycle route owes its name to a breathtaking mountain range. You cycle mostly in the gentle valleys of the Salzach, Saalach and Inn rivers with only a few ascents. From the start in Krimml via Salzburg and the Alpine foothills to Passau, the cycle route has a gradient of 750 metres. You will pass scenic and cultural highlights every day. Snow-capped three-thousand metre peaks will accompany you on the first part of the route to Salzburg and create the impression of a fairytale landscape. Extensive riparian forests and small towns lined up like pearls along the Inn characterise the second part of the route to the three-river city of Passau. The many highlights, tranquillity and dreamlike landscapes will make you forget your everyday life and promise pure relaxation!

Itinerary

Your destination lies at the foot of the largest waterfalls in Europe. Here, the roaring masses of water plunge 400 metres into the depths. You can admire this natural spectacle on a well-maintained mountain trail. Your bikes (if booked) will be ready for you at the start hotel.

Your cycle tour takes you through the Hohe Tauern National Park and the Oberpinzgau region. You will be constantly accompanied by snow-capped three-thousand metre peaks. Lush green meadows and cosy little villages alternate and provide a fairytale backdrop. In Kaprun you can visit the high mountain reservoirs.

You should take a refreshing dip in Lake Zell; sporty cyclists can do an extra lap here. Via Maria Alm with its famous pilgrimage church, you quickly reach Saalfelden, where you can enjoy your lunch break. Other highlights on your way to Lofer are the Seisenbergklamm gorge and the Lamprechtshöhle cave near Weißbach.

On today's stage, you cycle through the tranquil Saalachtal valley. Bad Reichenhall in the small German corner will enchant you with its Bavarian flair. Just a short distance and you have reached the Mozart city of Salzburg. The culturally rich programme will inspire you. You should plan enough time for a stroll through the old town and a visit to Mozart's birthplace.

With Salzburg you leave the world of the Alps and immerse yourself in the varied Alpine foothills. On your first stretch, you will cycle through extensive alluvial forests. From Tittmoning, the Tauern Cycle Path ends and from here you follow the Lower Inn Nature Trail to your stage destination of Burghausen. A magnificent old town centre and the largest castle complex in Central Europe are the most outstanding features of this town.

Today you follow the Inn as far as Braunau. The Gothic town is an excellent place to stop for lunch. There are numerous bird colonies along the way. You can cycle the rest of the way on both the Bavarian and Austrian side. Your stage destination Obernberg has a well-known market square with numerous baroque buildings.

You soon reach Reichersberg, whose monastery invites you to visit. The small towns you cycle through appear like pearls on the Inn. These undoubtedly include Schärding, where you should take a break in the baroque market square. Not far now and you have reached Passau, the final destination of this wonderful cycle tour. The city of three rivers has a lot to offer. The cathedral is home to the largest church organ in the world. A tour of the rivers would certainly be the crowning glory of this marvellous cycle tour.

After breakfast, individual return journey, return transfer or start of your extension.

Tour character

Easy to moderate

The Tauern Cycle Trail is signposted throughout and very extensively. The route runs on quiet, tarmac cycle paths and country roads, with only some sections on busier routes. Some short stages also have to be tackled on non-asphalted cycle paths. On the whole, the quality of the route can be described as very good. There are hardly any gradients on this variant. A cycle tour that is also suitable for families with children.
