Itinerary

Information and bike hire. Take a stroll through the pretty baroque town of Schärding.

We travel along the Inn to the three-river city of Passau. Here we recommend a short city tour, a visit to the cathedral with a concert on the world's largest church organ (except Sundays and public holidays). Cycle along the Danube via Obernzell to Engelhartszell (Austria's only Trappist monastery, liqueur tasting) and on through the Donauleiten nature reserve.

You reach the Schlögener Schlinge on the northern side. Here, the granite has proved to be an insurmountable opponent, forcing the Danube to change direction by 180 degrees. While a ferry takes you (under your own steam) to the other bank, you have time to admire this natural phenomenon. According to the motto: ‘It all begins in Linz’, the numerous pubs in the historic old town are the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat.

Today we are travelling a little way away from the course of the Danube to Enns. You should visit the town square with the 60 metre high town tower or the archaeological collection in the Lauriacum town museum in Austria's oldest town. In the baroque town of Grein, you can get an impression of Austria's oldest municipal theatre, which is still in use, or visit the shipping museum or Greinburg Castle.

The Strudengau - once feared by boatmen - now awaits cyclists. Where people used to fight against the Danube's currents, you can now enjoy a leisurely cycle. In Maria Taferl and Melk, mighty churches tower high above the Danube, attracting thousands of visitors every year.

Today, the route continues to the 1000-year-old town of Krems. High above the Danube, Göttweig Abbey points the way to Traismauer and the flower town of Tulln.

Your cycle tour ends in the Danube metropolis of Vienna. Be sure to visit the Wurstelprater, the lively amusement area of the Vienna Prater, and soak up the positive atmosphere. At the famous Schweizerhaus, you can recharge your batteries for further exploration of the city over a ‘Stelze’...

After breakfast, individual return journey, return transfer or start of your extension.

Due to the evening arrival of the return transfer in Passau or Schärding, we recommend booking an extra night.
