Salzburg-Vienna

Mozart, castles and Viennese waltzes

As enchanting as the arias of a Mozart opera and as lively as the sounds of the Viennese waltz - this cycle tour combines the best of Austria's most famous cultural metropolises: from Mozart's birthplace Salzburg to the waltz city of Vienna. Countless scenic and cultural highlights await you every day: the ‘Silent Night’ town of Oberndorf, the mighty castle complexes of Burghausen, the baroque town of Schärding. The Danube meanders elegantly through the Schlögener Schlinge, the Weinviertel greets you with its culinary delights. Last but not least, you cycle through the Wachau and from Krems you take the train to Vienna, almost every three quarters of a mile.

Itinerary

Arrival in the culturally rich city of Mozart. Take enough time for a stroll through the old town and visit Mozart's birthplace, the cathedral, Mirabell Palace and Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Oberndorf with the ‘Silent Night Chapel’ and extensive alluvial forests lead to Tittmoning. From here, follow the ‘Lower Inn Nature Trail’ to Burghausen. A magnificent old town and the largest castle complex in Central Europe are the most outstanding features of this town.

The Gothic town of Braunau and numerous bird colonies point the way to Obernberg.  Reichersberg Abbey is well worth a visit. The small towns along the Inn appear like pearls, including the baroque town of Schärding with its famous Silberzeile.

Along the Inn to the three-river city of Passau. We recommend a city tour with a visit to the cathedral (largest church organ in the world). Continue along the Danube via Obernzell and Engelhartszell (Austria's only Trappist monastery) through the Donauleiten nature reserve to the Schlögener Schlinge. Ferry ride to the hotel.

The famous Danube Loop is one of the many highlights of this cycle tour. The Danube markets of Aschach, Ottensheim and Wilhering lead to the provincial capital of Linz. According to the motto: ‘It starts in Linz’, there are numerous places to stop for a bite to eat in the historic city centre. Continue to Enns, Austria's oldest town (town square with town tower, Lauriacum town museum).

Along the Danube to the wonderful baroque town of Grein (town theatre, shipping museum, Greinburg castle). Through the once feared Strudengau into the Weinviertel to Marbach or Maria Taferl with its pilgrimage church high above the Danube.

Melk Abbey greets you impressively, the marvellous Wachau with the romantic wine towns of Weißenkirchen, Dürnstein and Krems enchant you. The journey continues by train to the capital city of Vienna with its many sights.

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.
