10-lakes short tour

Ten lakes, a ‘Silent Night’ and delightful days

A Christmas carol as beautiful as ‘Silent Night’ can only be composed in an equally beautiful landscape. And so it is hardly surprising that the song was composed in Oberndorf near Salzburg. The 10-Lakes Region is one of the most beautiful regions in Austria. The impressive mountains and lakes here characterise the year-round beauty of nature. Creative people still make Salzburg a centre of Austrian high culture today and lakes such as Lake Wolfgangsee awaken a longing for unspoilt idylls.

Itinerary

Arrival in Salzburg. In the late afternoon, tour information and bike handover (if booked).

First you cycle along the Salzach, then along the disused Ischl railway line to Eugendorf. The cycle path continues across lush meadows to Thalgau and to the foot of the Drachenwand, an impressive rock massif that extends into Lake Mondsee. The lakeside cycle path leads to the town of the same name.

Along the southern shore of Lake Attersee and then through the romantic Weißenbachtal valley over to the Trauntal valley and the time-honoured imperial town of Bad Ischl. Along the Ischler Ache river, it is a leisurely and short route to Lake Wolfgangsee. St. Wolfgang impresses with the White Horse Inn, the parish church and the cog railway up the Schafberg, Strobl, Abersee with the Zinkenbachklamm gorge and St. Gilgen, the Mozart village on Lake Wolfgang, are stage towns.

On the cycle path to St. Gilgen and on to the deep blue Fuschlsee. From there past the Hintersee lake and through the Strubklamm gorge into the Wiestal valley and on into the Salzachtal valley. From here you cycle the last few kilometres back to Salzburg with its numerous sights (fortress, old town).

After breakfast, individual return journey or start of your extension.

Tour character

Moderate

The cycle routes along the lake shores and the Salzach are completely flat. In between, the terrain is mostly hilly. The majority of the route leads from lake to lake on cycle paths and side roads with very little traffic. There are only a few short sections on roads with more traffic.
